Roughneck

Roughnecks carry out skilled duties as part of the drilling operation.

They must demonstrate personal understanding and commitment to safety, health and environmental issues, and be prepared to assist other trades as required.

Their duties include:

  • Operating the drill 
  • Maintaining and repairing drilling equipment
  • Using lifting gear, ropes and winches
  • Adding new lengths of pipe during drilling

Roustabout

Roustabouts carry out basic labouring tasks to support drilling, working under the supervision of a lead roustabout.

Their duties include:

  • Conducting and controlling rigging and slinging operations
  • Preparing site and equipment for rigging and lifting operations
  • Working with various lifting devices and equipment
  • Test-rigging to ensure safety and reliability
  • Conducting inspections and maintaining equipment
  • Tying rope knots, hitches, bends and splices
