Engine room

Chief Engineer

The Chief Engineer is in charge of the engineering department.

They are also responsible for the safety of the crew, machinery and environment directly within their control, and are accountable for the implementation of the company's policies.

Their duties include:

  • On-board discipline of all the engine department officers 
  • The safe operation of the vessel's machinery and technical plant 
  • Entry of all operational machinery parameters in the engine room log
  • Supervision and training of engineer cadets 


Second Engineer


Under supervisions from the chief engineer, the second engineer is responsible for the day-to-day engineering and technical operations.

Their duties include:

  • Preparing the main propulsion and other engine room plant for sea
  • Day to day operation of the main propulsion and other engine room plant
  • Maintaining the main propulsion and auxiliary machinery, cargo handling and deck machinery
  • Operating and testing all emergency equipment, as well as any other duties assigned by the chief engineer


Third and Fourth Engineers

They are responsible for maintaining engine room watches as required and reporting to the senior engineer officers regarding the operation and maintenance of the vessels machinery and technical systems.

Their duties include:

  • Preparing the main propulsion and other engine room plant for sea
  • Day to day operation of the main propulsion and other engine room plant
  • Maintaining main propulsion and auxiliary machinery, cargo handling and deck machinery
  • Efficient operation of all emergency equipment
  • Protecting the environment.
